The Museum is located at 301 Gervais Street, beside the historic Gervais St. Bridge and just a few blocks west of the State Capitol in downtown Columbia, South CarolinaGet directions.

The South Carolina State Museum is undergoing a few growing pains as we expand into a 21st century, state-of-the-art facility featuring a new Observatory, Planetarium and 4-D Theater! 


  • Monday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. 
  • Sundays 1- 5 p.m.
  • Open seven days a week Memorial Day through Labor Day and the month of December
  • Closed: Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

The State Museum has ample free parking on site for cars and buses.

You can spend an hour or a whole day in the State Museum’s fascinating galleries. Please allow yourself ample time to enjoy touring the four floors of exhibits and visiting the Cotton Mill Exchange.

Flash photography with electronic or built-in flash is permitted, except in the Lipscomb Art Gallery or in posted exhibitions. No tripods, please.
