The South Carolina State Museum offers FREE interactive virtual learning programs.
Each program is live with a specially trained museum educator with face-to-face interaction and live Q&A sessions.
Current Available Virtual Programs
Observatory Solar Viewing Experience
Grades: 5th and 8th grade focused; available for all grade levels
Duration: 30 minutes
Availability: Tuesdays through Fridays at times customized for your teaching schedule
See a live view of the Sun (weather permitting) from our observatory telescope! If it's cloudy, we have lots of cool pictures from our telescope to show. Your students will also interact with our astronomy educators and have a chance to ask their space questions. Our observatory virtual programs have recently been updated to incorporate grade level-specific content from the 2021 SC science standards.

Observatory Night Sky Viewing Experience
Grades: 5th and 8th grade focused; available for all grade levels
Duration: 1 hour
Availability: Tuesday through Friday evenings by arrangement with the Observatory Manager
Join our observatory manager for a special virtual night sky telescope viewing experience! Our observatory virtual programs have recently been updated to incorporate grade level-specific content from the 2021 SC science standards.
The Sky Above: A Virtual Experience
Grades: 1st, 5th, and 8th grade focused; available for all grade levels
Duration: 30 minutes
Availability: Tuesdays through Fridays at times customized for your teaching schedule
Get ready to reach for the stars! We’re going to go on an adventure in our very own night sky to learn about how the Earth moves, what kind of objects we might be able to see in our night sky, and the difference between stars, planets, and moons. This experience uses amazing software such as Stellarium and Worldwide Telescope to share these concepts with your students.
Please note that this program is very different from our observatory virtual solar viewing and night sky viewing programs. You may enjoy booking both this program and a virtual observatory field trip for an enriched SCSM astronomy experience!
